Strap-hanger Eternal Sleep

“Yes the subway is a place of menace; that is undeniable said Scott Siken…it is dark, dreamlike…It brings out the animal in people…To make it as an artist in New York City you have to learn to survive and thrive on the chaos. For us, that makes the subway more of a source of inspiration than fear. The subways are wild, chaotic and exciting. It is like being horrified by something scary and enjoying it at the same time.” Mr. Siken the sculptor seems drawn to a more metaphysical vein. His work perhaps the center piece of the show is a large concrete figure hanging from a beam called “Strap-hanger Eternal Sleep” He says it is meant to reflect a sense of limbo. But whatever its intent, it is clearly a figure at peace…eyes closed, head tilted and turned away, the perfect…victim.”
