The Monument Redefined
"Artist-organized exhibitions have had a very real history in NYC, beginning with the Armory Show of 1913..... What can or should be a contemporary monument?
True monuments are public statements arising out of a collective need and based on a personal understanding. Size was by no means a prerequisite for the works in the show; the challenge here is content with a social responsibility to communicate......
So, the ambitious project of presenting the Monument as the visual connection between the Artists, Society and Government was begun with The Monument Redefined....." By Executive Curator: Scott Siken. As Grace Glueck in The New York Times said, " The600-odd entries that poured in prompted Mr. Shifreen and Mr. Siken to add two interior sites to the Yard: three floors at the Professional Arts Building...and the Downtown Cultural Center....." as well as tho outdoor Public Place even visible to commuters on the F-train, one month of performances and three Panel Discussions at Cooper Union.
