Scrolls/Icons

This series is Sumi-e ink painted on vintage architectural coated linen “paper”. These are unconventional Sumi-e paintings in that the glossy surface repels the ink not absorbing it. The repelling causes textures and patterns that I learned to control through brush & ink selection. All widths are 31 inches and the lengths vary from 4 ft. to 8 ft.

“In a series called "Scrolls/Icons”, large totemic forms seem to emerge out of a collective unconscious struggling with tragedy and transformation.  These paintings were created with four foot bamboo brushes on elegant antique vintage paper. This series was a reaction to 9.11 which he witnessed and documented in photographs.”
